Once again, an inspired figure rather than a specific portrait allows Panchal to comment on one of the most powerful issues of our time. As the Syrian crisis occupied our mass media with such terrible regularity from 2011 onwards, Panchal was reminded of a lone figure he had glimpsed, begging on the underground, the geometry of his composition recalling the anonymous architectural spaces of the tube network, criss-crossed with tunnels and passages, ticket halls and escalators.
