Polish-Jewish immigrant Mark Wayner was raised in London's East End, befriending fellow 'Whitechapel Boy', Mark Gertler, whom he studied alongside at the Slade School of Fine Art from 1909-10, with Jewish Education Aid Society assistance. Wayner later established himself as a caricaturist, publishing two volumes of Celebrities in Caricature in 1931 and c. 1940, depicting celebrated individuals of the day across a wide field, from politics to the arts, and also including many influential Jewish figures. The celebrated painter, William Rothenstein, who had been an important early mentor to Gertler, also served from 1920-35, as Principal of the Royal College of Art, where he helped the next generation of artists including Barnett Freedman. He was knighted in 1931. With his small stature, round head, and round glasses, Rothenstein was also a gift to many caricaturists including William Orpen and himself.
