The police did not keep Leo in custody, but the entire episode had given me strength, imbuing me with confidence and security. I had called for help, and I had received it. For the first time, I felt protected.

Moreover, the police’s involvement reassured me that I was not overreacting, that there was a real danger in my situation that needed to be dealt with. Despite feeling unsafe for so long, I had always thought it riskier to run away, afraid that Leo would take my daughter, or find other ways to harm me. But now, with Gitelle an adult and Leo’s treatment worsening, I had no more reason to be afraid. I moved in with my widowed mother, leaving Leo once and for all.

He was increasingly bitter, and wanted to tell the world that I was a bitch. He once arrived at a party, walked in - and seeing me on the other side of the room, shouted profanities about me, as loud as his booming, deep voice could shout.

It was horrible, but I didn’t care anymore. I was free.
