The plot of "Aunt Sarah Walked from the Market" is based on a story I heard many times as a child from my father. Aunt Sarah, the wife of my father's older brother, returned to Western Ukraine after the war from Central Asia, where the entire family nearly died of starvation. On Sundays, she went to the market. She never had enough hands to carry everything she bought there or enough money to pay, so the merchants with their goods accompanied her all the way home, where they were paid.
