From the late 1950s onwards, Bornfriend experimented with abstraction in dialogue with British Abstractionists Patrick Heron and Peter Lanyon, exploring rhythm, pattern, colour and gestural mark-making. Primarily a painter in oil and tempera, he favoured still lifes and landscape.
