Mane-Katz’s ‘Algerian Jew’ was executed in 1934, during a period of extensive travels the artist undertook around the world, visiting, among others, Palestine, Egypt, Syria, Czechoslovakia, Poland and Lithuania. In this vibrant charcoal portrait, most probably executed from life, Mane-Katz’s focus is, first and foremost, on capturing the distinct facial features and the charismatic character of his sitter, with the elements of the sitter’s traditional outfit sketched out in a more loose way.
