Eisenmayer was a former inmate of Dachau concentration camp, where he witnessed many atrocities. Painted in 1962, the year in which he became a full-time artist, and also the year in which the Commonwealth Immigration Act was introduced to tighten the previously liberal postwar immigration policy, this painting, satirically titled 'Law and Order', depicts a white figure assaulting a person of colour. It highlights Eisenmayer's principal theme of violence and oppression and the ambiguous act of spectatorship enacted by the viewer. The flatly painted figures stand out against the sparse backdrop increasing the sense of drama and menace.
